The purpose of this proposal and annotated bibliography is to present a writing plan for one of the formal persuasive paper assignments to be completed in ENG 221RW course at Emory University. Instead of writing the paper from scratch, making a proposal with an annotated bibliography is certainly helpful since the concept dealt with in this paper is “place” which is very abstract and needs much critical thinking.
To narrow down the concept “place” into a more specific item to talk about, I started with doing the bibliography by reading the assigned selections including Space and Place, Place, and Rhode Island again. In this way, I was able to gradually come up with a theme that I want talk about in the paper. Mostly from Rhode Island, I discovered that “hometown” in relation to the formation of place is a very worthwhile concept to explore. After that I tried to look for sentences in the assigned readings that are related to my topic and also found another concrete example (minorities in Hong Kong) that can demonstrate my argument in the paper.
With a clear choice of topic, I started to write up the proposal by following the assignment guideline. I gave a little bit of background introduction to the topic and then listed some questions that I intend to answer in the paper. In addition, I named my paper “Place; Hometown; Self Identity” tentatively and organized an possible outline for the paper.
Since the topic and the argument are still a bit ambiguous and unclear at this moment, I invite everyone interested in my paper read through my proposal and annotated bibliography and give me any suggestion that you may have. Are you interested in the topic chosen? Are there any sources that you recommend me to look at? Is the structure of the paper clear to you?
