The visual mode is not only about using pictures in the assignments, but also about how to make an assignment look good, including formats, fonts and so on. During the semester, I have learned how to use images to furnish my presentation. Instead of simply using words to show my ideas on the PowerPoint slides, it was important to use pictures to visualise the presentation. The audience could become bored when they could only read the words on the slides. Multiple modals of communication allowed the audience to be more interested in what I was trying to say. I also incorporated videos into my slides which made the classroom more fun.
In addition, a lot of images were used in the digital story. Telling a story along with according images allowed the audience to visualise what I was talking about. For example, in my project of Cajun food, I used pictures of crawfish when I was talking about it. This combination allowed those who do not know much about crawfish get to know more easily by hearing and seeing what crawfish look like.
More importantly, it was important to format all my assignments to make them look the same. During the course of the semester, for any assignments in for the English class and all other classes, I have used the same header:
for example, for the English class I use
Lin, Jinxian Campbell Student ID: 2084241
Dr. Lauren Holt
ENG 101-03P: Southern (Dis) Comfort-Fall 2013
assignment title+version number
Due date of the assignment
Also, I have used the same margin, same font (Times New Roman) and same font size (size 12), not only all the assignments look consistently, but also I would be able to organised them more easily in the future when necessary. With a clear format, the professor would also be more comfortable with reading, commenting and grading my assignment. The consistency of formatting has benefits both the writer and the readers.
With the constant practice of formatting assignments, I have gotten more comfortable with college style paper formats.
