At the beginning of the course English continue writing courser ENG 221RW, I was not really sure what “place” meant. It was a very broad and abstract concept that I did not know how to understand and apply it to formal writing. However, as I read Tuan’s and Price’s pieces of writings on “place”, I developed a better background understanding of “place”. Throughout the process, I started to see the relationship between “place” and “human beings” and how we transform “space” in to “place”.
When the formal persuasive essay was assigned to be written about “place”, I needed to narrow down the concept to a more specific thing that I could thoroughly argue in my essay. Since I am studying abroad in the US and I am far from my hometown, the best idea that I could talk about was “home”. The assignment required me to draw connection between “place” and “self”. So, I developed an argument that “home is very power to define a person’s identity”.
However, before the actual writing process, I wrote a proposal on why I would want argue the above argument, what sources I would use to prove my points, what the structure of the essay would be and so on. In addition, I created an annotated bibliography of all the sources I was going to use and made comments on each of them.
With all the preparation, I started the actual writing process. I mainly wrote in a quiet place in the library and used a dictionary to help me with word choices and grammar usage. However, the writing process was not as smooth as I though. While I was writing, I found that one of the sources was not really appropriate and I needed to look for a new one. When I was looking at my personal bookshelf, I found one of the books that I have read to be suitable and the examples from the book turned out to fit the argument very well.
After submitting the version one of the paper, I received feedbacks on my essay, including some higher-order concerns such as organization and argument level and some lower-order concerns such as sentence structures and verb forms that I should work on. With a thorough examination of my essay, I have finished the second version of the essay which looks much better than the previous one.
